Imaginarium The Activity Station invites you to conduct experiments and explore science firsthand. You can use a microscope, mix chemicals or build contraptions as you dive into science. Science Guide volunteers will assist you as you explore a variety of activities from the life and physical sciences. The Activity Station is hands-on science for everyone! Find out the differences between the Chinook (king) the largest of Alaska's salmon and the Coho (silver), Alaska's second largest salmon. Learn their scientific names, about where they eat, where they live and their unique characteristics. Test your Alaska salmon knowledge by taking the salmon quiz! The Imaginarium's king and silver salmon are from the Fort Richardson State Fish Hatchery located near Anchorage on the banks of Ship Creek. Touch a real meteorite, look down on Alaska from space and see the northern lights in the Galaxy Room. You can take a fantastic trip through the solar system or join one of the planetarium presentations to explore the night sky. The Galaxy Room brings the universe to you! Creep and crawl, scoot and swoop into the world of insects, spiders, and other many legged things! Meet a tarantula, a scorpion, millipede, walking stick or hissing cockroaches. Live animals and hands-on activities combine with displays of other creatures to show you the surprising array of life. The Imaginarium has created a life-size casting of a Tyrannosaurus rex. Created by the staff of the Imaginarium and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Science, T. rex stands 10 feet tall and 25 feet long with 6-inch, dagger-shaped teeth and foreclaws longer than a human arm. The Imaginarium’s T. rex is sure to grab your attention! As the centerpiece of their newest exhibit, the T. rex will provide Alaskan children and adults with a chance to see and touch the size and shape of this prehistoric creature and encourage them to ask the questions that lead to learning and knowledge. Future additions to the exhibit include hands-on pieces that will allow visitors to investigate how carnivorous dinosaurs ate and learn more about the unique features of their skeletons.
