Location of Shenandoah National Park Shenandoah National Park Shenandoah National Park was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. In 1939, the Skyline Drive was completed. The drive takes you along the top of the ridges of this section of the Blue Ridges. This wilderness park offers great camping and hiking for the outdoor enthusiasts. The campgrounds are primitive and you will want to reserve a space in advance as they are very popular. Backcountry camping is allowed throughout the park, however you need to get a free camping permit. For those who prefer camping in a bed, there are cottages and other places of lodging located at different areas in the park. Hiking is the most popular activity in the park and there are over 500 miles of trails to stretch your legs on. Whether you wish to go less than a mile or on the 101 mile trail that runs the length of the park, or any distance in between, there are great trails for you to hike. Some trails lead to rippling waterfalls and some to beautiful scenic overlooks. Keep your eyes open for flora and fauna. There are several animals, birds, and plants to identify. Fishing is another activity that many campers enjoy. There is nothing like catching your own dinner. A Virginia fishing license is required and can be obtained at Big Meadows and Loft Mountain. Be sure to check which streams are open for fishing. For a day trip or a week long vacation, enjoy the wilds of the Blue Ridge. Have fun, but please help preserve the natural resources of the park. KAT'S VIEW I saw five deer in the park. My mom only saw three. That is if you count the ones on the signs! All the ones I saw were real. It was nice and pretty here. It was a nice afternoon drive along the tops of the hills. |
