Panther State Forest is located in the rugged mountains near the southern border of West Virginia, Virginia, and Kentucky. From Route 52, one mile north of Iaegar, turn at forest sign to Panther. At the Panther Post Office, turn left at sign and follow road approximately 3.5 miles to forest entrance. The 7,810 acre state forest offers a wide range of recreational opportunities.

Surrounded by beautiful mountains, the Panther State Forest swimming pool provides an ideal spot to cool off and relax from the summer heat. A wading pool for children is also available. The pool opens Memorial Day weekend and closes Labor Day. Evening pool rentals are available.

Picnic areas vary from areas with playgrounds, shelters, volleyball court, grills, picnic tables, and hand-pumps to picnic areas off by themselves with a fireplace and picnic table. Picnic shelter reservations are available by calling the park office.

A small campground is located in a heavily wooded area.

The forest offers excellent opportunities for hunting and fishing. During the spring months, a four mile section of Panther Creek within the forest is stocked with trout. Excellent deer, turkey, squirrel, and grouse hunting is permitted in-season on the forest and on the 2,830 acres of wildlife management area that connects to the forest. Hunting is not permitted in designated safety zones. West Virginia state hunting and/or fishing with trout stamp license is required.

Hiking Miles of connecting trails and unimproved roads are open for hikers and walkers. All gated roads are open to foot traffic. Map and trail guides are available at the forest office.
