Location of Monterey Bay Aquarium Monterey Bay Aquarium Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (closed Christmas Day) Since 1984, visitors from across the globe have marveled at ocean wonders at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Its innovative exhibits have changed the face of modern aquarium design, and it is generally considered the finest in the United States – if not the world. A trip through the aquarium takes visitors on a journey into the hidden world of Monterey Bay, from shallow tide pools to the vast open ocean, with special exhibitions that highlight marine life from the oceans of Earth. Highlights include the Outer Bay galleries, with a million-gallon indoor ocean that’s home to sharks, sea turtles and giant bluefin tuna, plus the largest jellyfish exhibits anywhere; a towering three-story kelp forest – the first living kelp forest in any aquarium; a two-story exhibit for playful sea otters; many hands-on experiences; the Splash Zone family gallery; and a host of jewel-box exhibits that reveal the delicate beauty of smaller sea creatures. Special exhibitions include “Jellies: Living Art,” with graceful living jellies that are displayed beside works of fine art inspired by jellies and other marine life (through summer 2005); and “Sharks: Myth and Mystery,” home to two dozen species of sharks and rays from around the world in galleries that explore how people across the planet have celebrated their connection with these fascinating fishes (through 2006). In summer 2004, as the aquarium celebrates its 20th anniversary, new “Aquarium Adventures” programs begin. They include “Underwater Explorers” (a modified SCUBA experience for kids age 8 to 13), “Science Under Sail” expeditions on Monterey Bay, behind-the-scenes tours, whalewatching and kayaking opportunities, and special weekend morning programs for families with toddlers and pre-schoolers.
