Location of Caladesi Island Beach Caladesi Island Beach Caladesi is one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands in Florida. Shore birds and sea turtles build their nests among the dunes. The park consists of six islands and about 650 upland acres and more than 1,800 acres of surrounding mangroves and grass flats. Only the hardiest plants (Sea Oats, Beach Morning Glory and Sea Purslane) survive on dunes behind the open beach along the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. This is where the turtles and birds like to make their nests. Beyond this the environment changes and you will find several species of grasses as well as trees like the Palmetto, Hercules Club, and Sea Grape. Two of the main residents of the park are the Burrowing Gopher Tortoise and the Eastern Diamond-back Rattlesnake. Better watch your step while enjoying the serenity of the park! Further inland at a slightly higher elevation is yet another change in the environment where you can find Live Oak, Red Bay, Sabal Palm, and Southern Red Cedar. Along the eastern coast Mangrove forests prevail. It is one of the few plants that thrives in salt water and there are four species on the island. There is lots of outdoor recreation to be enjoyed in the park. Bring your boat and dock at the 99 slip bayside marina or you can anchor offshore. Kayaking is popular and you can rent one at the park concession. Fishing is abundant and so is shelling. There are picnic pavilions and bathhouses for your convenience. And for the youngsters there is a fun playground when they are tired of the beach. And there are plenty of trails for nature studies. And of course there is lots of beach for sunning, swimming, and castle building. |
