Ormond Beach
Ormond Beach, Florida
Ormond Beach is located on the northern end of the greater Daytona Beach resort area in Northeast Central Florida. It offers hotel, motel, and timeshare facilities, as well as a number of beautiful condominium properties for your consideration.
This area is known for its famous drive-on beach, one of the few available in the world. Ormond Beach nickname, the "Birthplace of Speed", comes from the turn-of-the-century speed records set here on the beach.
During the prime racing era in Ormond Beach, 1903-1910, the longest-held land speed record for the mile was set January 26, 1906, by F. E. Stanley's Rocket Racer, driven by the legendary Fred Marriott.
His record, 127.659 miles per hour, held for four years. This was during a time when world records were being broken on sometimes an hourly basis (the mile world record was broken three times in 30 minutes at the 1905 Ormond Beach event). Marriott's 1906 record stood until Barney Oldfield finally broke it in the Lightning Benz by just 4 mph four years later.
Ormond Beach has areas to suit every need. Some of the beach areas permit driving; however, the northern areas do not.
