Location of Huguenot Cemetery Huguenot Cemetery When the yellow fever epidemic struck in 1821, the mostly Catholic city of St. Augustine had no place to bury Protestants. The City Council obtained a half-acre of land by federal approval for that purpose. The local Presbyterian congregation acquired the property in 1832. The name "Huguenot" probably refers to the members of the 1564 French expedition that established Fort Caroline, later Jacksonville. |
