Dunedin has a rich American and Scottish heritage. This is the oldest town south of Cedar Key. At one time Dunedin had the largest fleet of sailing vessels in Florida. This was made possible by the forefathers building a dock to accommodate schooners and sloops. This brought pioneers from as near as Georgia and as far as Scotland. The first settlers where primarily cotton and citrus growers. Where the city of Dunedin sits now was once a large cotton field.
Dunedin has a few firsts that they are proud to tell you about. The first is the amphibious tractor, called the Alligator, assembled in Dunedin and used in World War II. It played a decisive role in the Pacific phase of the war. And of course Frozen orange juice concentrate, and the "Pram" sailboat racer both originated here.
Dunedin has two fantastic Islands to choose from and we are sure you will want to visit both. First take the short drive to Honeymoon Island State Park. It offers a natural getaway for boating, swimming, fishing, picnics and nature walking. Second is Caladesi Island State Park, accessible to the public by ferry from Honeymoon Island or your own private boat. It has been named one of Florida's top ten beaches. Take the trip and enjoy the protected waters of St. Joseph Sound. You will find all the sun you can handle. Activates include windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing or keep your feet on the ground and take a walk on the beach and just relax.
