Titusville is located on the Indian River on the East Central Coast of Florida. The Kennedy Space Center is located less than ten miles to the east across the Indian River and all space launches are clearly visible to the to naked eye at the river’s edge. The United States obtained Florida from Spain in 1819 and Florida became a territory in 1822. This portion of Florida, (Titusville, Brevard County) had very few white inhabitants until after the Civil War when the ability to homestead a section (160 acres) of land was give to Veterans to entice settlers to the area. Florida became a state in 1845 and the census listed 66,500 white residents, of the entire state, mostly in the northern area. Titusville was located in an area known as Mosquito County shortly after statehood in the mid 1800’s but was changed to Brevard County to attract more homesteaders. With the building of the Florida East Coast Railroad to Titusville in the 1880’s and down to the Miami area in the 1890’s, Florida began to grow. |
