Coeur D' Alene, with a population of abut 35,000, is the 6th largest city in Idaho and one of the most beautiful places in the United States. The name "Coeur D' Alene" was given to the area's inhabitants, the Shee-Chu-Umsh Indians, by early French Canadians or French speaking Iroquois Indians. Translated into English, it means "heart of awl," or hearts like the point of an awl. The reason for this name remains a mystery. Today, Coeur D' Alene is a thriving tourist town featuring a wide variety of activities. Silverwood, Idaho's largest theme park, is just a few miles north of town. Coeur D' Alene is also home to lots of shopping and even more outdoor recreation. The Coeur D' Alene Resort Golf Course, home to the world's only floating green, was selected by Golf Digest as America's most beautiful resort golf course. |
