Location of Ca` d' Zan Ringling Estate The Ringling's first venture in Sarasota was the splendid Venetian Gothic mansion Ca d' Zan, built between 1924 and 1926 for a total of $1.5 million. The Venetian styled palazzo reflects their European tastes and passion for opulence. Mable had developed and affection for Venetian buildings on their travels and personally collected sketches and photos to incorporate into the design of the house. She supervised the construction of the house with New York architect Dwight James Baum, builder of several New York mansions. CA d' Zan, the winter home of John and Mable Ringling, reopened to the public in April 2002, after the completion of a six-year restoration and conservation plan. The restoration has returned the Venetian Gothic style mansion overlooking Sarasota Bay to its original Late Gilded Age splendor. After years of research, conservation and restoration, Ca d' Zan has been transformed to authentically reflect the flamboyant lifestyle achieved by John and Mable Ringling. Together the couple's passion for beautiful things produced one of the most important art museums in America and a grand home designed for entertaining their friends. The restoration has preserved the renowned showplace, a proud legacy from John and Mable, and enhanced the understanding of this great collector. |
