The new Sunshine Skyway Bridge opened in 1987 with a state-of-the-art design. It
is four miles of superstructure that is awe inspiring with a vertical clearance
of 193 feet. In 1980 one of the worst disasters involving a bridge in the
United States happened when a freighter rammed into the bridge during a blinding
squall and knocked out a large section. The new bridge is designed to
withstand impact of a large tanker doing 10 knots!
