Location of the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president lived in this Presbyterian Manse from 1860 to 1870. "Tommy" spent the formative years of his childhood in Augusta, years that would affect him for the rest of his life. While living in Augusta, Wilson experienced the hardships of the Civil War and Reconstruction. He also began his education and tasted leadership as president of the Lightfoot Baseball Club, and grounded his deep Presbyterian faith. The Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson is owned and operated by Historic Augusta, Inc. Historic Augusta preserves and maintains the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson in order to inform and educate the public as to how Woodrow Wilson's childhood in Augusta, Georgia affected him as he later served as President of the United States. Thomas Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated as the 28th President of the United States on March 4, 1913. His two-term administration was among the most notable in U.S. history. In 1917, during his second term, the United States entered the First World War and Wilson played an international role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles and the organization of the League of Nations. Woodrow Wilson said, "My earliest recollection is of standing at my father's gateway in Augusta, Georgia, when I was four years old and hearing someone pass and say that Mr. Lincoln was elected and there was to be war." The dining room table and chairs are the original ones around which the Wilson family sat. Wilson remembered the table when he visited Augusta during his presidency, relating a story about scratching the pedestal of the table while playing under it as a boy. |
