Location of Middleton Place House Middleton Place Plantation The main house was built early in the 18th century and was burned by Union troops in 1865. The walls were leveled by the Great Earthquake of 1886. The only main building left is the restored gentlemen's guest wing built in 1755. Today this building serves as a museum of rare Middleton family furniture, silver, china, books, and historic documents. From 1741 to 1865 four generations of the distinguished Middleton family stayed here. First there was Henry Middleton, a president of the First Continental Congress. Then there also was Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence; another Henry Middleton, Governor of South Carolina and later Minister to Russia; and Williams Middleton, a signer of the Ordinance of Secession. |
