The Plantation Stableyards are a busy place. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was necessary for the plantation to be self-sufficient. Animals were tended to and crops were sown and harvested. Hinges and nails, boards and shingles, soap, candles, yarn and cloth were all made by hand on the plantation. Today, craftspeople demonstrate the skills that were performed by the slaves back then. They are surrounded by the domestic animals that work and live among them. You can also view Eliza's house that was built in 1870 as a two-family dwelling for freed blacks. You can also view one of the slave cemeteries that was at Middleton Place.

KAT'S VIEW

The Middleton Place stableyard was cool. There were sheds and inside them people were demonstrating what slaves would be doing. There were cows, horses, billy goats (some were just babies), and other animals. It was nice. They were cleaning the horses and milking the cows. I loved the stableyard.
