Location of the Parish Church of St. Helena

The Parish Church of St. Helena
501 Church St.
Beaufort, South Carolina

The St. Helena's Episcopal Church originated with the founding of St. Helena's Parish in 1712. The Church was built around 1724. This is a very beautiful church. It has a classic colonial interior that can be seen on weekdays. Twice monthly there are concerts on the 1150 pipe Taylor and Body organ in the church sanctuary. They still use this church today, having Sunday services.

The graveyard is a final resting place for parishioners dating from the 1700's to today.  Several of the family plots have many generations buried here. A couple of the more notable individuals buried here are Tuscarora Jack Barnwell, 1724 (Beaufort's favorite son), and Confederates Lt. General Richard H. Anderson and Brig. General Stephen Elliott. During the Civil War the tombstones were used as operating tables.

KAT'S VIEW

The Parish Church was cool. The church though was established in 1712. It was around before the Revolutionary War. There was a graveyard there. The graves, most of them were from the 1800's. Some of the graves were very recent and some were completely destroyed. Some of the gravestones were ridiculously small yet some were really big. I liked walking around the graveyard. Most of the gravestones were from the Civil War. Today there is still service in the church.
