Location of Colonial Williamsburg Brickyard Colonial Williamsburg See how all the bricks were made for the structures here. Tradesmen will show you how the clay is made usable and the bricks are formed and then laid out to dry. This looks like it would have been a very tedious job to have back in the 1700's. They would work at this from sun up to sun down. You then see how the brick maker stacks the bricks into a carefully laid out pile and fires them. When they are ready to be used, the mason would carefully take the pile apart to use the bricks. The brick maker would usually set up his brick making area where ever the mason was building. That way the bricks would not have to be transported. It was interesting to watch these people working. KAT'S VIEW The first step in making bricks was to stomp out the clay to make it usable. How tiring it looked, they had to do this for hours before it could be used. Then you would roll a little clay in sand and put it into a brick form. And then you lay the bricks in the sun for a week to dry out. I would not have wanted to be a brick maker. |
