Bruton Parish Church

The Bruton Parish Church was formed in 1674 by merging the
earlier parishes that dated back to 1633. The current church was built in
1715 and has been in continuous use since then. Today there are 1800
members of the church and they have four services on Sunday and daily prayer at
noon everyday. Visitors are welcome to join in these services. The church has had many notable people who worshiped here
including Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, and Tyler. There are
also other illustrious patriots and Pre-revolutionary English notables who
worshiped here. You will find plaques at the end of each pew that name
many of these people. The churchyard has many graves from the 1600's and 1700's
including Colonel John Page who died in 1692. He is the one who gave the
land to the church. In the early days all the head stones were imported
from England leaving many of the graves that completely fill the grounds
unmarked. There are also 42 graves that have been identified who were
buried within the church. The more prominent of these are marked by stones
in the floor. KAT'S VIEW The Bruton Church was nice. George Washington and
Thomas Jefferson both worshipped here. The graves in the church yard were
very old. The oldest I saw was from 1692. I also liked the organ
pipes and the angel lectern.
