The College of William and Mary is the second oldest institution of higher education in the country. The college was granted a royal charter by King William III and Queen Mary II in 1693. There are three original colonial buildings today. The central building is the oldest academic structure in continuous use in America. By the 1730's the two other buildings were completed. One was originally constructed to be an Indian school and the other was the home of the college president. The college was attended by many notable figures in American history including Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, John Tyler. Early alumni also included 16 members of the Continental Congress, 4 signers of the Declaration of Independence, and more than 100 Supreme Court justices, United States senators and representatives, governors, and ministers to foreign countries.
