Built in 1858 by Bolling Walker Haxall, this magnificent Italianate Villa has been restored to authentic historical specifications. The Woman's Club purchased the house in October 1900. At that time they had a membership of 14 women who felt strongly about providing educational opportunities for women at a time when few attended college, owned property, and were not allowed to vote.

The Woman's Club still owns the house today and offers free tours. The house was added on to in the early 1900's. The back porch was enclosed and a beautiful ballroom was added. The house was built for luxury and entertaining. Downstairs, the rooms are large and have an impressive 14 foot ceiling. The original chandelier still hangs in the entry hall. The furnishings add to the craftsmanship that went into the building of the mansion.

Today the Woman's Club provides educational and performing arts programs for the benefit of the public. They host Fall and Spring lecture series, theatre performances, and also scholarship programs. The club offers use of the ballroom to selected groups for performing arts related productions and other appropriate activities. It is also a popular place for weddings and receptions.

You will enjoy seeing the splendor and opulence when you tour this mansion. A tour of this Historic Landmark is a must on your visit to Richmond.

KAT'S VIEW

The house was beautiful. There was a mirror on top of the mantle that was framed with gold that was inlaid with pictures of leaves and plants. The gold chandelier had images of monkeys playing instruments on top of it. There were also pretty crystal chandeliers in the house. I would have loved to live in a house like this.
