Location of Colvin Run Mill Historic Site Colvin Run Mill Historic Site Colvin Run Mill was built between 1802 and 1811. It was a water-powered gristmill located along the road that connected the Shenandoah Valley to the port of Alexandria. It was used through 1934. The Fairfax County Park Authority acquired the decaying mill in the late 1960's. They have restored it to recreate its early appearance. Today, there is the mill, general store, barn and blacksmith shop, and the 1809 miller's house. The General Store is in a building from the late 19th century. You will find examples of merchandise that would have been sold here from the 1890's to the 1940's displayed on the top shelves and hung from the ceiling. They sell the grain that is ground at the mill as well as candies and various sundries. In the barn and blacksmith shop are tools of farmers and tradespeople who lived in the area at the turn of the century. On Saturdays you can watch the blacksmiths work on various projects. The mill was built of brick and today is a combination of original and replacement brick. The waterwheel is a reproduction of the original wheel. The axle is made from a single white oak log. Notice the gears and the technology that was used in the early 1800's. You may want to call to see when the millers will be grinding corn or wheat so you can see everything in action! KAT'S VIEW The mill was very interesting. Dad turned the one thing that lets more water out, and the wheel started to go very fast. I don't think he was supposed to do that! They weren't grinding the corn when we were here, but it would be fun to see when they did. |
