Edgewood Plantation is located at: 4800 John Tyler Memorial Highway Enjoy a tour of the 1849 Edgewood Plantation. The home is furnished with
many antiques collected from all over Virginia. It has appeared in
Victorian Decorating Magazine twice to show the beautiful decorating of the
plantation house. The current owners purchased the house in 1978. It
was terribly run-down and they have worked hard to renovate it back to the
splendor of the mid 1800's. Join your hostess (dressed in period clothing) for a tour of the house and
gardens. Check out the unusual staircase. It is one of the only
freestanding you will ever see. There are several collections of antique dolls,
clothing, and furnishings. The house is completely original except for the
kitchen. Learn how the house has been used for several different functions. During
the Civil War, the living room was used for a church. There is a lot of
history from the Civil War that your hostess will entertain you with.
Other history of the house includes that it was used as the first restaurant in
the area. It also housed the first telephone switchboard and at one point
the post office. Halloween and Christmas are big events here. Learn about the ghost
upstairs during the Halloween Ghost tours. See the 18 elaborately
decorated Christmas Trees and other gorgeous decorations during the fun
Christmas tours. You can see the 1725 grist mill. Unfortunately it is not in the condition
to see the interior. While not on the major James River plantation tours, this is one you will not want to miss.
