Location of George Washington's Gristmill George Washington's Gristmill The original gristmill was built in 1771. Washington had it built to replace a severely deteriorated one that had probably been built by his father. The mill was larger and more efficient allowing Washington to market his grain and flour in the West Indies, England, and Europe as well as locally. The mill was built from local stone, two and one-half stories high and 32 by 46 feet in dimension. In 1933, the Commonwealth of Virginia reconstructed Washington's gristmill on its original site based on documentary evidence and the results of archaeological investigations that revealed the footprint of the building. The reconstructed gristmill has been recently restored. It is one of the most authentic recreations of an 18th century mill in the country. Visitors are able to observe every step of the process that was required in the 18th century to transform seed to bread. View the millers in action, producing the flour and cornmeal. KAT'S VIEW This place was very interesting. The water wheel was made out of steel. There was corn grinding. They make the corn into cornmeal, grits, and animal food. They grind wheat into flour and cream of wheat. They had some fresh ground cornmeal there. |
