Location of Honeymoon Island Beach Honeymoon Island Beach Honeymoon Island State Park is located at the west end of S.R. 586, north of Dunedin (at the end of the Dunedin Causeway). While being named other names, in 1939 a New York developer constructed 50 palm thatched honeymoon bungalows and the island was renamed Honeymoon Island. Americans got their first glimpse of Honeymoon Island in the early 1940's through newsreels and magazine ads, which promised undiscovered pleasures for newlyweds. The palm-thatched bungalows, sub-tropic climate and balmy breezes seemed perfect. It's a popular place for young honeymooners. Today it is a state park full of natural beauty. Travel along the island's northern loop trail and find osprey nests, a variety of shorebirds, and one of the few remaining South Florida virgin slash pine stands. Other important coastal plant communities found on and around the island include mangrove swamps, sea grass beds, salt marshes, tidal flats, and sand dunes. Honeymoon Island has more than 208 species of plants and a variety of shore birds, including several threatened and endangered species. Resource management efforts include the removal of exotic species of plants and return the island to native Florida vegetation. Ecological burning keeps accumulated fuels to a minimum and helps reduce exotic plant life while preserving fire-tolerant native species. The most popular attraction for visitors however, is the beach. Enjoy fishing, swimming, or just sunbathing on a nice stretch of sand. Bring a picnic lunch or you can get something in the cafe on the beach. |
