The Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1960 on this marshy peninsula. It provides sanctuary for thousands of migratory waterfowl. There is also an abundance of wildlife that calls the sanctuary home. Besides the many birds, you can also find river otter, muskrat, raccoon, whitetail deer, gray and red fox. Then there are several turtles, frogs, and snakes including the cottonmouth.

This sanctuary is a great place for bird watchers. You can pick up a bird list which has listed 154 species that is based on observation of the refuge. It tells the time of year and also whether the bird is commonly found or a rarity during the four seasons.

There are several places in the sanctuary where you can fish. You can check with the park service to see what kinds of fish you can catch during different times of the year.
