Fort Story is an active military base. when you come to visit the attractions here you will have to go through the checkpoint. You will be asked to provide picture ID for all adults in your vehicle as well as vehicle registration and proof of insurance. They will also ask to have everyone step out of the vehicle, open all doors, trunk, and lift the hood. Your vehicle will be inspected. No firearms or weapons of any sort are allowed. When done you may then proceed to these attractions which are very near each other.
You first reach the two lighthouses. The newer one, built in 1881, is the black and white striped one. However, the one most visitors are here to see is the brick lighthouse. This is the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse that was commissioned by George Washington and constructed in 1791.
Just a stone's throw down the road from the lighthouses is the Cape Henry Memorial. Here you can look out to the beach at the first landing site where the first English Settlers to America came in 1607. See the First Landing Cross sight and the Statue of Compte de Grasse.
