Location of Isabel Miller Museum Isabel Miller Museum In the spring or fall, Tlingit women would dig the roots of selected spruce root trees. The roots would then be steamed and stripped of their outer bark, split, and cured for the duration of the summer. After the appropriate length of time, the roots were split more finely, coiled and stored. In the winter they would weave the baskets. "Hard Hat" divers repaired fish traps, packed explosives for underwater demolition, maintained and repaired boats and ships beneath the waterline and salvaged wrecks. Here you see the diving suit belonging to Emmett Hodges. The Colonial Russians purchased Chinese tea bricks to secure a supply of brown tea from Canton, China. The tea bricks were also occasionally used as a form of currency. The Russians acquired these bricks from the Chinese in exchange for Alaskan sea otter pelts. Also included in the exhibits you will see photographs of Prince and Princess Matsutoff, the last Russians to be in charge of colonial Russia; The Pistol from US Gen. Jeff Davis, stationed in Sitka at the time of the transfer; Cpt. Emmons' journal describing the transfer; a copy of the Purchase treaty and Purchase Treasury Warrent; and much more.
