Location of National Air and Space Museum National air and Space Museum The 23 galleries of the National Air and Space Museum tell the awe-inspiring story of flight from the first balloons to the sands of Kitty Hawk, to current space exploration. With all this the museum here only has space for 10 percent of the Smithsonian's aviation and space collection. The rest is housed in the new Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center in Virginia. You can take a shuttle between the two to view them both if you choose. Here at the Mall you will see the original Wright 1903 Flyer. Then you can also see Spirit of St. Louis flown by Charles Lindbergh across the Atlantic in 1927. Kids especially will enjoy the 'How Things Fly' gallery with more than 50 interactive exhibits that demonstrate the principles of flight. In Einstein Planetarium you can sit back and relax and learn about the heavens. The museum has a great many space exploration exhibits including the Apollo 11 command module. There are many rockets that are actual size, not small replicas. You will be amazed with the size of them. There are exhibits with space food, survival equipment, and the space suits worn by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Gene Cernan. KAT'S VIEW They had the Wrights Brothers exhibit. And a moon rock that you can touch. It was so cool. There were different types of space rocks. This was a wonderful place to go. There is a food court if you get hungry. And a great gift shop. |
