Location of Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum was founded in 1966. It features many ship models and maritime antiques. It is an incredible display to see. As you walk into the downstairs portion of the display, the awe-inspiring models are all made to the same scale. You can visualize the many differences in size and construction of these magnificent ships. The craftsmanship of the models is superb. The upstairs has models of varying scales. There is a military exhibit and a model of the sinking Titanic. There is also a model of a wooden ship skeleton showing how a wooden ship is built. Another room on the second floor is dedicated to maritime artifacts. See the tools used on board a ship and a great display of scrimshaw, a favorite pastime of the old sailors. In the beginning, the museum was located on River Street in an old warehouse. Then in 1997 was moved to the William Scarbrough House. The mansion belonged to William Scarbrough who was a shipping merchant. He became a principal investor and president of the Savannah Steamship Company. The company owned 'Savannah', the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. The house is the earliest example of Greek Revival in the Deep South. The mansion was renovated and the beauty of the estate is a compliment to the beauty of the ship models. You will also enjoy the collection of maritime themed paintings that adorn the walls. The entrance to the museum is through the back garden. The garden itself is a beauty to behold. Be sure to enjoy a stroll through the garden on your visit. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day we visited or we could have spent the whole day photographing this beautiful garden. KAT'S VIEW The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum was filled with models of old ships. There were tons of them called Savannah. If you say something about about a specific Savannah, they would have to ask 'which one?' The models were awesome. I had fun. |
