The Lea County Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Native Americans, ranchers, farmers, homesteaders, town builders, oil men, and other residents of Southeast New Mexico.

The museum grounds house several buildings including the Commercial Hotel built 1918, the Love House built 1908, the Baker School built 1914, the Store and Post Office built 1913, the Dugout built 1908, the Caprock Store built 1913, and the Reed House built 1950. Other exhibits include the blacksmith shop, tack room, farm equipment shed, wagons, buggies, and much more.

The county seat of Lea, Lovington became a town in 1908 when settlers from east of the Texas line homesteaded the western edges of the Llano Estacado in New Mexico Territory. New Mexico became a state in 1912. Lea became a county in 1917.

The Lea County Museum was created by the Lovington Women's Club in 1969 when the club purchased the Commercial Hotel, which was about to be razed.

The Commercial Hotel was built in 1918 by a group of Lovington ranchers and businessmen. It changed names several times, becoming the Love Hotel, then the Plaza Hotel.
