Location of the National Atomic Museum National Atomic Museum The National Atomic Museum is the nation's only Congressionally chartered museum of nuclear science and history. The museum was established in 1969 as an intriguing place to learn the story of the Atomic Age, from early research of nuclear development through today's peaceful uses of nuclear technology. Visitors can explore how nuclear science continues to influence our world. The museum strives to present through permanent and changing exhibits and displays the diverse applications of nuclear energy and its pioneers. Some of the exhibits include Pioneers of Science including Madame Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Lise Meitner; What's Hot, What's Not - Radiation in the World Around You explaining both naturally occurring and man created radiation; The Manhattan Project, WW II, and The Cold War; Seeing is Healing, a look at Nuclear Medicine; Waging Peace, the history of Arms Control; and ZOOMzone™, where inquisitive young minds can try their hand at science activities. Museum visitors can view and photograph displays presenting the development of the Atomic Age, including replicas of the world's first two atomic weapons, Little Boy and Fat Man, which were built and used at the end of World War II. |
