The Soldiers National Museum features major events of the Civil War with carefully constructed dioramas. There is also a collection of Civil War relics and also artifacts from other major American conflicts. These are some of the miniature dioramas you will see. Fort Sumter, the was begins on April 12, 1861. It is daybreak and the first shots of the war are fired. The Battle of Mobile Bay, fought on August 5, 1864 in Mobile, Alabama. Lookout Mountain, fought on September 10-13, 1863 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Monitor and the Merrimac, this famous battle of the sea fought on March 9, 1862 at the mouth of the Chesapeake in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Battle of Atlanta, fought on November 12, 1864 when Atlanta, Georgia was destroyed. The Winter of 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia where Lee's army lies hungry and immobile in a desperate final holdout. The last diorama is of Lee's Surrender on April 19, 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia.

As you are leaving the display area, you will meet Johnny and learn of the time from 1866 to 1877 when it was turned into an orphanage. The wax figure of Johnny, an orphan chained to the wall in a replica of the dark, dank, cellar-dungeon of this old Civil War orphanage.
