Location of the Parris Island Museum The Parris Island Museum The Parris Island Museum's mission is 'the portrayal of the history of Parris Island and the Port Royal area, with an emphasis on Marine Corps recruit training and the history of the Marine Corps in the 20th Century'. The exhibits begin with the landing of the French Huguenots in 1562. They continue on with the brief Spanish occupation and the arrival of the English colonists in the late 1600's. The early patriots of the area defended Beaufort and Port Royal from British attacks during the Revolutionary War. After the war there were cotton plantations on the island. Then in 1861 during the Civil War, the Federal Navy captured Port Royal Sound. Parris Island became a federal military installation for the remainder of the Civil War. The displays in the local history wing provide memorabilia and artifacts from these eras. In 1883 a new Navy yard began on the island. In 1891 Marine barracks were established. Then in 1911 the Navy yard was closed and the island was used as a Navy prison. Finally in 1915, the island was given to the Marine Corps to use as a recruit depot. From here the exhibits follow the development and history of combat for the Marine Corps. A tribute to all the Marines who have served to keep America safe. See the exhibits of World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, all the way to today. Also see the roll of women in the Marine Corps. All the way through these exhibits you can see the changes in style of uniforms and weapons. Remember when visiting the Parris Island Museum that you are entering a military installation. You will be required to show your identification (driver's license) and your vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to tour the Depot on Parris Island. KAT'S VIEW The Parris Island Museum was in a Marine training area, or a military base. It was a pretty nice place actually. Everything was spotless. They had an exhibit on all of the uniforms that the Marines wore. There were models of all the wars and weapons used from all the different countries and wars. I liked the museum a lot. They had a picture made out of broken plates, rock, and tile. That was very cool. |
