Location of South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Museum South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Museum The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area. It focuses on South Carolina's military history from the revolutionary War to the present. The main focus however is on the Civil War. There is a terrific Civil War flag collection with many SC Regiment flags, including the 1st S.C. Volunteer Infantry Regiment flag from 1861. There is also a great number of military weapons. Some of the other items of interest include a battle field Medical Chest. The tools and medicine bottles were used in the Civil War. You will notice as you look at these displays that there are many personal items of the soldiers displayed as well. This makes for a much more personal feel as you see what life was like for the soldiers. There is also a letter by General Judson Kilpatrick, Sherman's cavalry commander, that in his words describes South Carolina as the "hellhole of secession". These are just a few of the many wonderful items you will find here. KAT'S VIEW The SC Confederate Relic Room and Museum had a bunch of really old stuff, but not as much of the new stuff. They had a tiny old diary. There was a rifle you could pick up, or strain a muscle trying! It was very heavy. They had a miniature chess set, that was portable and fit inside of a small box that a soldier had. Plus there was a drawer of things used as Civil War bullets. |
