The John Jay French House was built in 1845. It was the first house in the area to be painted and also the first two-story house. It is Beaumont's oldest surviving house. It was also the first home built with milled lumber.
With all this historical significance, it is no wonder that the Beaumont Heritage Society has preserved this home and made it into a museum. It demonstrates the life of a prosperous Texas pioneer family from 1845-1865. The historic pioneer settlement, built by John Jay French, tanner and merchant, is replete with antique furnishings, clothing and pioneer household utensils. Outbuildings on the grounds include a blacksmith shop, tannery, privy and smokehouse.
