Location of American Farm Frontier Culture Museum The American Farm comes from the Valley of Virginia near the town of Eagle Rock. It shows the culture that developed in rural America. It was a typical set up of the middling sort of farm in the early to mid 19th century. The original part of the log house is the two-story section, with one large room down, one room up, and an end chimney. In the 1840's they added more land to their farm and expanded the house. They had many outbuildings, the biggest being the barn. Then they had a pig pen and chicken coop, a corn crib, a produce shed, a tobacco barn, a smoke house, a spring house, and a wash house. Many farm families produced most of their own food. They also produced commodity crops, especially wheat, for market. Many of the families like the one that owned this farm also owned a slave to help with the work. As you go through the American farm, you can see how the three cultures, German, Scotch-Irish, and English, melded together in the development of the American farms. KAT'S VIEW The American farm was spread out. There were several buildings like the kitchen, the barn, and the house. There was one girl there who was going through the slow process of making lye soap. |
