Location of Chimborazo Medical Museum Chimborazo Medical Museum The Chimborazo Hospital is part of the National Battlefield Park. Richmond was the Capital of the Confederacy and there were many battles fought in the area. Due to the vast number of wounded, the leaders ordered five general hospitals to be built in Richmond. Chimborazo was the most famous. The hospital was opened in 1861. It covered over 40 acres with 75 to 80 wards that were huts made from pine. More than 76,000 Confederate soldiers were treated here. They lost 20% of their patients, a relatively low percentage for 19th century medicine. Today, visit the museum to see the instruments the doctors and medics used. In the map room you can view the lay out of the hospital. The medical profession has come a long way since this time. KAT'S VIEW The Chimborazo Medical Museum was very cool. I liked all the little kits there. The smallest was the pocket medical case. One had a huge saw in it. That was the Pre-Civil War surgical kit, but if you want to see saws, the Confederate surgical kit was full of them. The second biggest was the field medicine chest and the biggest was the Medical Chest they had for the hospital. |
