The James Madison Museum showcases the life of our 4th President, James Madison, who was raised and was a farmer in Orange County. It also tells of the history of agriculture and farming in the area and also rural Virginia's culture and history. There are also changing galleries that showcase many different subjects. On our visit they had an exhibit on Harley Davidson motorcycles and they had several early models of Harley's on display.
The Madison Room has some wonderful artifacts from Madison's life. You can see James' Campeachy Chair and Dolley's Guilt Mirror. There are several pieces of their furniture and books. It tells a great deal about their lives.
The lower level houses the farm exhibit. There are many tools that had been used in the farming industry in Orange County. To make learning fun for children, the museum has a "scavenger hunt" for children to find the answers to questions about the history and life of the farmers in the area. There is a partially reconstructed 1733 "cube" house. This is the type of home constructed by a the first small farmers to the area.
KAT'S VIEW
I found a few interesting things here. One was called "Madison Salt", which was a hand blown salt glass. There was an original chair of Madison's there, too. Thomas Jefferson designed it. There was a room about farming here too. They had some old farming equipment in here and told the story of the first farmers in the area.
