Reston is a relatively new community that began development in the 1960's. It began as the idea of Robert E. Simon. He sold his holdings in Carnegie Hall and used the proceeds to purchase the 7,000 acres that make up Reston. In 1963, he developed a Master Plan for the entire area and the plan is still followed today.

Mr. Simon wanted to integrate life in the suburbs. He created work, living, and recreational space all within walking distances. The town is planned for a person to be able to spend their life here. From a young adult starting out in a new apartment and advancing through life and financial status moving up through condo, townhouse, and large grand home all in the same community. And through all this development, you will feel like you live in a park, as 1/7 of the land is in open space and will never be built on. There are places for shopping, dining, and recreation in select areas throughout Reston.

The museum has been founded by the Reston Historic Trust to showcase this award-winning, innovative, planned community. Reston has served as a model internationally for urban planning and design.
