Take a country drive south of Charlottesville to Walton's Mountain. Schuyler is the boyhood home of Earl Hamner, Jr., the writer of 'The Walton's'. He based his characters in the television show on the members of his family. When you visit the museum, you will learn about Hamner's family, the history of Schuyler, and the Walton's TV show.
Around the museum there are many pictures. One wall is dedicated to the town. You can see how the Alberene Soapstone Company made the town what it was during the time that Earl Hamner was growing up. The mill employed most of the people in the town. When it went out of business the town dwindled down to where it is today with just a handful of people living here. There is also an exhibit room with artifacts from the company.
The rest of the museum showcases the Hamner family and the Walton 'family'. Different rooms have been designed to show the television sets. You can enter John Boy's bedroom. See his desk and typewriter. There is the front parlor or living room and also the kitchen. One room has the Baldwin sisters still that they used to make their moonshine. There is also the piano and seating from their parlor.
One room is filled with the scripts from the show. There are shelves all around the room filled with them. You can also learn about many of the other shows that Earl Hamner wrote.
KAT'S VIEW
The museum had several things that had to do with the TV show "The Walton's." They had what the living room looked like, the kitchen and a miniature model of the farm house. They had a Walton's board game, TV guides, and Walton dolls. There were lots of toys made from the show.
