Location of Fort Toulouse - Fort Jackson Fort Toulouse - Fort Jackson Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson has been a part of Alabama's history for over 6000 years. The rich history of the site ranges from prehistoric times through French colonization and American expansion in the early 1800s. You can visit an A.D. 1100 Mississippian Indian Mound, a recreation of the 1751 French Fort Toulouse, and the partially restored 1814 American Fort Jackson. The site is also the home of many natural wonders. William Bartram, a famed 18th-century botanist and friend of Benjamin Franklin, visited the site in 1776 creating notes and drawings of the area's flora and fauna. Monthly living history programs include the French Early American periods along with a monthly meeting of historic blacksmiths. Two major living history events occur annually. The French and Indian War Encampment in April re-enacts the time period of the war between the French and the British. Alabama Frontier Days in November depicts life on the frontier from 1717 to 1820. The public archaeology program focuses on archaeological features of the site to laboratory analysis of artifacts found during excavations. The Graves House, a Carolina Tidewater Cottage built between 1825 and 1830in Lowndes County, Alabama, serves as the visitor center and museum.
