Location of Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument The Little Bighorn National Monument in southeastern Montana memorializes one of the most famous battles in our nation's history. Here, in June of 1876, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry of nearly 600 men fought against several thousand Lakota and Cheyenne Warriors under the command of Chief Sitting Bull. Custer and his men were beaten badly as Custer and 260 other men were killed while only managing to kill a few dozen Indians. After the battle, fearing retaliation from the U.S. Government, Sitting Bull and his tribes fled north to Canada. Today, visitors to the battlefield have the chance to walk through the Custer National Cemetery and a visitor center with artifacts and informative displays. There are also trails through the battlefield where you can see markers where Custer and other soldiers fell and a mass grave where most of the soldiers were buried. |
