At the Cold Harbor Battlefield you can drive around the area and see the entrenchments that were built by the Confederate soldiers and the Union soldiers. You can see the field between the two forces where they had a bloody battle. There are still many well defined trenches that have been preserved.
This was a major battle in the 1864 Overland Campaign. During the two week battle, the combined casualties for both armies were at least 16,000 men. The battle here changed the course of the war in the East from one of maneuvering to one of siege.
KAT'S VIEW
At Cold Harbor there were tons of trenches. If they were mountains it would be a whole range. Men would be huddles behind them. There were both Union and Confederate trenches there. I saw more Confederate than Union ones. It felt real weird here. You know they had to use their shovels a lot. They probably wore them out.
