Location of Drewry's Bluff Drewry's Bluff On a bluff overlooking the James River, Drewry's Bluff was an important stronghold for the Confederate forces in keeping the Union Navy from reaching Richmond. Union soldiers referred to it as Fort Darling. On May 15, 1862, five Federal vessels, including the ironclad Monitor, attacked the fort but were driven off. The Confederates successful defense prevented Richmond from being shelled early in the War. Walk along the self-guided trail through the earthenwork fort. Much of the earthen defense system is still intact so you can visualize the happening that are described on the plaques along the fort. It is easy to see why this was such an important location for the Confederate forces. |
