Fort Harrison includes the vicinity from Battery Alexander to Fort Brady. During the 1864 Overland Campaign, General Grant crossed the James River and directed his main effort against Petersburg. In a surprise attack designed to prevent Lee from shifting troops to another area, Union soldiers captured Fort Harrison on Sept. 29, 1864. The gallantry of several regiments of black Union troops was recognized by the awarding of Medals of Honor to 14 black soldiers. A self-guided walking trail provides details of the battle and the forts.
