Location of Indian Caverns Indian Caverns Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, the Indian Caverns were first opened to the public in 1929. The tour of the cavern is a two-thirds trek where you will see many interesting formations. Your guide will explain the history of the caverns and point out various formations. The lowest area of the cavern is 140 feet from the top of the mountain. Learn about these natural formations that it took Mother Nature thousands of years to create. In 1928 during cavern development, the owner unearthed Indian relics and bone fragments, he also discovered a tablet of Indian petroglyphs. The collection of spear points, tomahawks, and other primitive tools is on display in the caverns. KAT'S VIEW These caverns were around during the dinosaur age. They put up a little scene with dinosaurs. Two really interesting formations were called the lion and the elephant. The elephant's trunk was hollow. A very interesting formation was a musical rock. By hitting with your knuckles it would play a musical note. |
