Location of Robert E. Lee's Headquarters Gettysburg National Military Park General Robert E. Lee's headquarters were located in the house of the elderly widow Mrs. Thompson near McPherson Ridge. "Old Lady Thompson never deserted her house... All her clothes and bedding, except those on her person, were used in dressing the wounded and her carpets in wrapping the dead for burial. An empty stone house and fenceless yard were all that was left for the widow of 70 years." Exhibits in the house show several artifacts from the war. There are the shutters to a shed structure that are full of bullet holes. There are many riffles, swords, ammunition, uniforms, pistols, a surgical kit, and several person items. One exhibit has the following notation. "This is the table which Generals Lee, Longstreet, Earle, Ewell, and Adj. Taylor ate supper from the evening of July 1, 1863. In addition to this table, the light green chair and the table cloth lying on it, were in this room during General Lee's occupation of the house." This little house museum is not on the National Park tour. It is privately owned and you will find it along the drive from the tour of the first day's battle. KAT'S VIEW The most interesting things that I found were the swords. One of them was an officer's sword and it had an eagle on it. There was an 1833 dragoon saber and a cavalry officer's saber. There was a surgical kit too. |
