Location of Virginia Memorial Gettysburg National Military Park On the last day of the battle, General Lee planned to attack the center of the Union line. They began by an assault for two hours from their cannons. Then, what was to become known as Pickett's Charge, began. At this point, Pickett began a charge through the field to the middle of the Union line. He had 12000 soldiers advancing through this field. They got as far as the "high Water Mark" before being turned back. A great number of men were killed or wounded during this charge.' The memorial shows General Lee on his horse Traveler, and the men below represent the many men who fought from Virginia. Take the very short walk to the area where General Lee met his men as they were retreating from this charge. |
