The fighting at Gettysburg during the Civil War is history. Upon these peaceful, tilled Pennsylvania fields, more men fell than in any other battle fought in North America before or since. The three days of battle occurred on July 1-3, 1863. The battle encompassed over 6000 acres all around the small town of Gettysburg. General Lee marching his Confederate troops from the north and General Meade bringing his troops from the south clashed on these fields leaving over 51,000 dead, wounded, and missing. Many of the Union soldiers who died here are buried in the National Cemetery where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.

While there is much that has been written about the battle and it has been immortalized in movies, a visit to the battlefield brings a better understanding of all that happened and why this was such a turning point and so important in the outcome of the Civil War. You can imagine the heroics and also the desperation of the soldiers here. The National Park Service offers great walks, talks, and other activities that are designed to help you understand the events that occurred here. There are no charge for these and their professional and knowledgeable staff will be able to answer questions you may have. Walk in the footsteps of those who made history here. View the monuments and memorials (over 1000 of them) and remember those who fought for their beliefs. Many of the monuments are beautiful sculptures, true works of art.
