Founded in 1954, the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary is a retirement home and rescue center for abandoned and unwanted primate pets as well as research animals and former show animals. Many would have been put to sleep if not for this sanctuary.

Currently there are twenty nine chimpanzees, one gorilla, three orangutans, and nineteen monkeys (nine different species of monkeys). Most are elderly and many had been altered by their former owners. Some were rescued from scientific research.

Otto is a gorilla. He came to the sanctuary when he was two years old suffering from tuberculosis and septic arthritis. Cheetah is a chimp and was a movie star. He is in his sixties and was in the old Tarzan movies.

The Sanctuary is in the process of renovation at this time. Many of the enclosures are old and in need of replacement. The facility is a non-profit organization 501(c)3 and is in need of donations of time, money, and supplies. Donation of professional services would be greatly appreciated as well. You can also help by joining their Adopt A Primate program. They also have the Primate Walk of Fame in which you can purchase an engraved brick.
